An assessment was carried out on 4 and 5 November 2002 at Marshes Upper, in the grounds of Dundalk Institute of Technology, Dundalk, Co. Louth. Currently occupied by two playing pitches, the site is proposed for the development of a nursing and health-studies facility and a new access road. The ground of the fields had been previously reduced to provide a level surface, and soil had been introduced and landscaped along the southern and eastern boundaries of the site.
Seven test-trenches were excavated in the eastern playing field. A range of early modern and modern finds was present in the topsoil, which was 0.3–0.45m deep. No soils or features of archaeological origin were revealed. A system of modern land drains was uncovered running at regular intervals of 11–13m through all trenches. These were oriented north-east/south-west and directly underlay the sod layer, cutting the topsoil and the natural, yellow/brown, gravelly boulder clay. The cut, 0.4m wide and 0.45m deep, contained a PVC pipe at its base, and was refilled with small pieces of gravel.
