Pre-development assessment of a proposed residential extension at 8 Anne Street, Dundalk, Co. Louth, was carried out. The development site was within the zone of archaeological potential of Dundalk as identified in the Urban Archaeological Survey. Anne Street lay outside the town walls, and the current housing on the site dates from the mid-19th century. St Malachy’s Catholic church (19th century in date) is beside the site. Testing at Nos 35 and 49 Anne Street produced nothing of archaeological significance (Excavations 1998, No. 444; Excavations 1999, No. 594).
Three test-trenches were excavated by machine within the development area. In each trench red-brick demolition rubble overlay the light brown, sand-and-gravel substratum. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
