The expansion of the campus of the University of Limerick across the River Shannon into County Clare necessitates the construction of a bridge across the river. The University proposes to construct an additional student village, ‘the 4th village’, at Garraun, Co. Clare. Other elements of the campus will be added in the future. The nearest Recorded Monument is the ruins of Plassey Mill, c. 100m north-west of the Limerick part of the development.

The works on the south (Limerick) side of the river include the removal of topsoil from the site, the raising of the ground level of the area with hardcore (as this will be the site compound for the main bridge contractors and the project engineering staff), the construction of a temporary Bailey bridge to allow access to the Clare side, and the installation of services. The removal and storage for reuse of the riverside topsoil sods on both riverbanks is also required, as these will form a Special Area of Conservation when the project is complete.

Monitoring of all of the topsoil-stripping and wetland sod removal in Sreelane, Castletroy, revealed no archaeological features. Several sherds of pottery, mostly of 19th-/20th-century date, were found.

Further monitoring of the construction works for the permanent bridge will take place in 2003.
