As part of Bord Gáis Éireann’s Pipeline to the West a submarine section of gas pipe was laid across the River Shannon, between Leahys townland, Co. Limerick, and Shanakea townland, Co. Clare. The total length of underwater pipeline was c. 2km. Monitoring of the dredging operation was conducted on a continuous basis over two weeks, and five individuals worked shifts over 24-hour days.

Monitoring entailed the shipboard examination of mechanically excavated silts from the riverbed. No archaeological deposits or artefacts were encountered.
