The development site is to the rear of buildings on the northern side of Maiden Street. It comprises a large concrete-covered yard and an adjacent greenfield site, the whole situated on quite a steep slope running downhill from east to west.
Monitoring of groundworks took place from 9 to 11 December 2002. The area to be stripped measured c. 40m by 15m. The topsoil-stripping was carried out by a mechanical digger with a flat bucket. The topsoil was a dark brown, silty loam with a maximum thickness of c. 0.4m, coming down onto a red/mid-brown, clayey silt subsoil. Aside from several demonstrably modern rubbish pits, nothing was encountered during monitoring.
