Monitoring was carried out during the construction of two workshops at River Lane. River Lane is on the line of a medieval lane, which provided access to the Abbey River from Meat Market Lane and the Abbey Gate of the medieval town. Although the site was also in the vicinity of the medieval abbey of St Francis, the site of which lay to the south-east, nothing of archaeological significance was found. This may have been due to the fact that the foundations dug were not deep enough to reach the potential archaeological strata in the area. This is supported by information from other archaeological investigations in the area, most notably by Celie O Rahilly (Excavations 1997, No. 350, 97E0227).
