Monitoring of a trench, measuring 8m by 1m, excavated for the foundation of a set of five banner poles directly outside the entrance to the King John’s Castle Visitors’ Centre revealed a shallow gully and a stake-hole of indeterminate age. The trench was c. 1m deep and cut into clay subsoil. The deposits above were 0.7m thick and almost entirely comprised modern fills. Two small areas of possible early deposits, less than 0.1m thick, were removed. The only finds date to the last 100 years.
