The site of a development comprising the construction of six townhouses in an area just outside the southern line of the medieval town wall of Kilmallock was tested in January 2002. Three cuttings, 10m by 1m, were opened by mechanical digger across the width of the site. The investigation did not reveal any features, contexts or finds of an archaeological nature. The evidence suggests that, despite its urban setting, the site in former times was a field given over to agricultural uses, and no evidence of building activity, even of relatively recent date, was noted. Buried topsoil was revealed in each of the cuttings, deposited on the surface of the boulder clay and associated with two stone-filled field drains. Ground level was raised to its present height a number of years ago by the dumping of mass clay and rubbish. A large pit was noted in Cutting 3, the digging of which seemed to have preceded immediately the levelling of the site, as the infill, which included a few plastic items, was identical to the overlying modern material.
