Testing was carried out in June 2002 at the northern end of the carpark to the rear of the Spar shop on Lord Edward Street, outside the southern line of the medieval town wall of Kilmallock. The site was one of three blocks of a mixed development of retail units and apartments (see also Nos 1194 and 1195, Excavations 2002, 01E1163 and 01E1165 ext.). The testing consisted of the mechanical excavation of three cuttings. Cutting 1, measuring 7m by 1m by 3m deep, was positioned perpendicular to the known line of the town wall, and very substantial clay deposits relating to the town ditch were exposed (Ditch 2; see No. 1195, Excavations 2002). Cutting 2 measured 7.5m by 1m by 1.65m deep. A stone-filled drain set into the boulder clay was exposed but no features of archaeological interest. The excavation of Cutting 3 was abandoned when mass concrete below the carpark surface inhibited further work.
