Work on the Castleconnell Sewerage Scheme began in April 2001 (Excavations 2001, No. 748). Monitoring continued on this scheme until 14 June 2002. The work was contained within the road network of the village of Castleconnell and the surrounding area, in the townlands of Coolbane, Cloon and Commons. Trenching in the village revealed a post-medieval to modern stratigraphy. The sole exception occurred to the east of the castle, where an organic layer was recorded c. 1.6m below ground level. This layer extended for 4m and was up to 0.4m thick. Although no artefactual or datable material was recovered, the layer was consistent with medieval dumping.
