This site was examined as part of Bord Gáis Éireann’s Pipeline to the West. Two small pits were excavated, and a layer of material underlying the topsoil was examined. Pit 2 was subrectangular, measuring 0.59m by 0.52m, and was 0.1m deep, with a concave profile. The fill was a dark brown, sandy silt with frequent charcoal pieces and occasional stone inclusions. This deposit produced a fragment of burnt bone. Pit 4 was an irregular oval, measuring 0.32m by 0.22m, and was 0.16m deep, with a concave profile. The fill was a mid-grey/brown, sandy silt with a moderate amount of charcoal and stone inclusions.
A soil layer was recorded below the current topsoil in the baulk section and in patches remaining in stone sockets across the uneven, stony surface of the site. The section revealed that the deposit increased from 0.05m deep on the higher ground at the south-east of the site to 0.2m deep at the south-west; it probably continued beyond the investigated area in all directions. The material was a mid-orange/brown, sandy silt with flecks of charcoal and crumbs of burnt clay. Although this material also lacked definite dating evidence, it is thought to relate to late post-medieval agricultural activity or possibly local brick production, which has been demonstrated 750m to the west by Graham Hull (No. 1164, Excavations 2002, BGE 3/67/4, 02E0557).
The artefacts recovered consisted of a small piece of worked chert from the surface of the site and small fragments of burnt bone from Pit 2 and the soil layer.
