Abbeyfeale Urban Renewal Scheme was processed under Part X of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Regulations 1994. On foot of an archaeological assessment carried out by the Archaeological Unit of Limerick County Council, Dúchas recommended the monitoring of groundworks.
The scheme is concentrated largely in Market Square, Main Street and Church Lane. Works include the installation of traffic-calming measures on the eastern and southern approaches to the town centre; the insertion of 275m of 255mm-wide storm sewers in the town centre, with a 300mm outfall, c. 1.5m below existing ground level; the replacement of the existing water main where it needs to be upgraded from 100mm to 150mm; the installation of public lighting and underground electrical and telephone services; and road resurfacing.
Works began on 9 September and are continuing. Phases I and II have been completed. Nothing of archaeological significance has been uncovered.
