Test-trenching was undertaken at Our Lady’s Hospital, Manorhamilton, before the construction of a block vault for the proposed reburial of all of the skeletons recovered in the two phases of excavation (Excavations 2001, No. 737, 01E0720, and No. 1061 above) in the cemetery of the former workhouse.
One test-trench, 6m long and 5m wide, was excavated by machine at a location thought to be beyond the western boundary of the known graveyard. However, four burial-cuts were recorded at a depth of 0.75m. From the size of these cuts, three were adults or sub-adults and one was an infant or baby. These findings show that the workhouse cemetery extends farther to the north and west than was previously thought.
