Testing of the length of the Newrath East Link Road, part of the N25 Waterford Bypass, exposed the remains of earlier land divisions and tracks, mostly associated with the surviving field pattern but including fragments of an earlier arrangement. The earlier field system is probably medieval (perhaps older), associated with a ringfort or ringwork close to the mouth of the River Blackwater.
