Test excavations around three standing stones at Airmount Cross as part of the N25 Waterford Bypass revealed no clear evidence of construction date or function. At least one stone pre-dates the crossroads and the present field pattern (late 18th/early 19th century), and all three are probably prehistoric. A cist burial appears to have been set at the foot of at least one stone.
Other stones may have formerly stood in the group, but a suspected fourth (recumbent) stone was found to be a recent arrival and was discounted.
