Planning permission was granted for the demolition of a building on this site and the construction of apartments and office and retail units. The site, at St Kieran’s Street, Kilkenny, lies within the zone of archaeological potential of the historical city. The grant of planning required that testing be carried out. A survey of the existing buildings was first undertaken. After this, a further planning condition required that the external walls of the development site be retained to first-floor height. All internal walls and the modern street-front wall on St Kieran’s Street were demolished. The remaining external walls were retained to first-floor level before development. A support slab, 0.3m thick and 2.5m wide, was placed inside the walls before testing. This slab covered a large part of the development site, masking most of the proposed pile locations. However, a single trench was opened in the centre of the site. Natural, orange/brown, clayey sand was encountered at 0.7m. A gravel fill overlay this. No finds or features of an archaeological nature were noted in the trench.
