Two test-trenches were opened at this site as part of a planning application to add a basement level to the building. The site lies within the zone of archaeological potential of the historical city of Kilkenny. The trenches were excavated by hand within the building. The stratigraphy noted generally consisted of a layer of concrete (0.1m) overlying a loose, 19th-century rubble fill (0.7m), which overlay a layer of sand and tightly packed earth and clay (0.3m). This overlay tightly packed gravel (0.3m), which appeared to be natural. Both trenches filled with water at a depth of 0.9m, where gravel was encountered. No archaeological finds or features were noted in either trench.
