Planning permission was granted in 1997 for a development at Green Street, Kilkenny, on a site that comprises a 19th-century street-front grain store with a large garden area to the rear. The projected line of the city wall is thought to run through the garden. Testing was carried out on-site in February 1999 (Excavations 1999, No. 442). Thirteen trenches were opened, and it was concluded that there was no evidence of the city wall.
Monitoring of groundworks for the current phase of development was carried out in November 2002. This included the digging of foundation trenches for the new buildings. No finds or features of an archaeological nature were noted during monitoring.
