Monitoring of the digging of foundations took place on the site of a recently demolished bakery of 19th-century date adjoining a shop on the west side of Market Square, Castlecomer. The site was within the zone of archaeological potential as defined by the Urban Archaeological Survey. Two parallel trenches were dug, each c. 5m long, 0.8m wide and 0.8m deep. They ran roughly north–south. In the trench on the western side, the uppermost 0.5m consisted of demolition rubble comprising stone and red brick, overlying unmortared rubble that had formed the foundation of the bakery wall. Below this was undisturbed yellow clay. In the eastern trench the yellow clay was reached almost immediately. There was no trace of any activity earlier than the 19th century.
