An excavation was carried out before the proposed M4 road development on a site at Pitchfordstown, Co. Kildare, from 12 to 14 November 2002.
Testing in all areas of land-take was carried out by Dermot Nelis between 11 February and 10 April 2002 (No. 908, Excavations 2002, 02E0141). Site 22 was identified as a linear feature extending beyond the excavated area northward but within the proposed land-take. The feature truncated a small charcoal spread. It was recommended that this site be fully excavated before construction works.
A small area of in situ burning was the only feature of archaeological potential on the site, although this was impossible to date and may be relatively modern. All other features identified represented modern activity in the form of pits and drainage channels or natural variations in subsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was identified at the site.
