An excavation was carried out before the proposed M4 road development on an area measuring 20m by 20m at Pitchfordstown, Co. Kildare, from 21 to 24 October 2002.
Linear testing in all areas of land-take before the start of construction works was carried out by Dermot Nelis (No. 908, Excavations 2002, 02E0141) between 11 February and 10 April 2002. Site 11 was identified during testing, c. 50m to the west of the eastern field boundary of Site AE26. A series of timbers measuring c. 7m north-west/south-east by 2m was interpreted as the possible remains of a puddle togher, although, owing to the confines of the testing programme and the waterlogged conditions, it was difficult to provide detailed interpretation. It was recommended that the area at Site 11, c. 20m by 20m, be fully excavated before construction works.
The potential archaeology was shown to represent a field boundary that had been infilled around 25 years ago, and the timbers were the remains of bushes and trees that had been pushed into the ditch. Nothing of archaeological significance was identified.
