Limited excavation was carried out in October 2002 in association with restoration work to the wall of Moone Abbey. The work was necessitated by some minor masonry repairs to the walls of the abbey, where previous conservation work appeared to have been footed inadequately. The excavation work was conducted in three separate areas of the south chancel wall and consisted of the removal of soil accumulations within cavities formed by the erosion of the wall face. In the easternmost and westernmost areas the cavities resulting from the deterioration of the wall fabric were superficial, affecting mainly the interior wall face, but in the central area the affected area extended the full depth of the wall and appeared to be backed by wall collapse on the exterior side of the abbey wall. Disarticulated bone, predominantly human, was found in all three areas.
