Testing took place at this site before road construction on the Heath–Mayfield scheme. The site is shown on the 1939 edition of the 6-inch OS map, depicted as a ‘Children’s Burial Ground (Disused)’; it is not recorded on the first-edition 6-inch map. At the time of testing, the site comprised two tree stumps surrounded by an oval concentration of stones, c. 9m in diameter, with several small breaks in slope.
Two trenches, 10m by 1m, were manually excavated. Trench 1 produced the disarticulated remains of an infant, confirming the presence of a cillín (children’s burial-ground). The site will be subject to further investigations, including geophysical testing, before any road-construction works.
