Monitoring of a proposed carpark development at St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, took place from 10 to 14 June 2002. Monitoring was required because of the proximity of several archaeological sites 300–400m south-east of the development. Before development the site consisted of a green area immediately west of the library building. The development area measured 50m by 50m and consisted of a fairly level field containing semi-mature trees.

Approximately 0.3m of material was removed by machine across the site. In addition, two small test-trenches and two drainage trenches were excavated to depths of 0.5–1.05m below the ground surface. Stratigraphy consisted of a clay layer at c. 0.5m below the ground surface. It was unclear whether this was undisturbed natural or redeposited. It contained no archaeological features or finds. Overlying this was a very mixed layer of rubble, red brick, mortar, plastic, iron pipes, old iron and plastic objects, cables and numerous quantities of modern crockery, all intermixed with clay. Overlying this was a thin topsoil and sod layer. Monitoring produced no finds or material of an archaeological nature. The ground was clearly made up of modern material, probably introduced as part of the landscaping associated with the adjacent library building, constructed around 30 years ago.
