An assessment was carried out at the site of a proposed water pipeline at Mainham, Co. Kildare. The proposed development consists of the construction of a water-supply pipeline, c. 30km long, running from an existing reservoir site at Duncreevan, west of Kilcock, to its termination at a proposed reservoir at Castlewarden South.
The proposed development falls within 30m of two monuments in the townland of Mainham: a church and graveyard and a motte. Testing was carried out on 28 May 2002 along the line of the proposed pipeline route. Five trenches were excavated. The results showed no evidence of archaeological activity. This section of the Clane–Kilcock road was constructed in the last few years and has scarped through the landscape, so it was unlikely that any archaeological material would have survived. This has been confirmed by testing.
