An excavation was carried out at Killickaweeny, Co. Kildare, before the proposed M4 road development. Two areas were excavated from 15 to 19 July 2002.
Before the start of construction work, testing was undertaken in all areas of land-take by Dermot Nelis between 11 February and 10 April 2002 (No. 908, Excavations 2002, 02E0141). Site 19 was identified during testing within Site 104. Site 104 was recorded in the environmental impact statement as a possible low-visibility semicircular enclosure, measuring 24m east–west by 15m, with the apparent remains of an external ditch. Detailed testing in this area failed to reveal any remains of a bank, ditch or internal elements of the enclosure. Two small archaeological features were revealed in two separate trenches. It was suggested that these features were not related to the enclosure but were two isolated features. It was recommended that this site be fully excavated before construction works.
The excavation took place from 12 to 19 July 2002. An area measuring 10m by 10m around each of the features was opened. A number of plough furrows and drainage channels were recorded. The features identified during testing represented changes in natural subsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was identified during the excavation.
