Monitoring of topsoil-stripping before the construc-tion of a residential development took place in the townland of Palmerstown, Co. Kildare, in December 2002. The site is in the village of Johnstown, near church ruins and a graveyard (SMR 19:14).
The landscape is low lying, and during the monitoring programme buried peat was identified, indicating the increased possibility of archaeological features surviving. Monitoring was therefore extended to include the excavation of service trenches and house foundations.
With the exception of land drains and ploughmarks, no features of archaeological significance were identified. Monitoring of house foundations will continue in 2003.
