Athgarvan GFC is in an area of archaeological potential and within the boundaries of an archaeological complex. There are numerous individual monuments within the boundaries of the complex, although none is recorded in the immediate environs of the site.
Groundworks associated with the development of a surface carpark began in January 2001. However, no planning permission for the development had been granted, and the works ceased on the site after the intervention of the Department of Defence and DĂșchas. Approximately half of the carpark area had been subjected to topsoil-stripping and general ground reductions at this time. This area was subsequently visually inspected by both the writer and an official from DĂșchas, and no features or deposits of archaeological interest or potential were noted. Planning permission was subsequently granted for the development, and work recommenced on the site on 5 October 2002.
All remaining topsoil-stripping associated with the development of the carpark was undertaken under archaeological supervision. No features of archaeological potential were uncovered during the work.
