Testing was undertaken at Site 69 of the M4 Kinnegad–Enfield–Kilcock Motorway Scheme. Site 69 was recorded in the environmental impact statement as a possible enclosure with a low, curving bank in the north-western quadrant of a field. A geophysical survey was carried out on-site (in April 2002) after the testing was complete. This identified a number of positive pit-type anomalies and weak linear anomalies that were interpreted as natural soil variations or modern activity.
Nine trenches were opened across the site; they failed to produce any material of archaeological significance. The programme proved that the bank to the west and south of the site was a naturally occurring feature. In all trenches the topsoil and ploughsoil sealed the natural subsoil, which varied across the site from bright yellow/orange to grey clay with high concentrations of decayed stone.
