Testing was undertaken at Site 67 of the M4 Kinnegad–Enfield–Kilcock Motorway Scheme. Site 67 was recorded in the environmental impact statement as being part of the historical complex of Cloncurry. This consists of a large motte and bailey, a medieval church and graveyard, and a deserted medieval village. The proposed motorway route passes c. 1.5km south of Cloncurry motte and bailey.
Three linear and 22 offset trenches were excavated. Testing revealed topsoil sealing geologically deposited strata across the whole site. Topsoil was on average 0.4m deep over natural, yellow/brown, silty, sandy clay with regular flecks of iron-pan inclusions and high concentrations of decayed stone. The area was not heavily disturbed by field drains/modern farming practices.
Testing failed to reveal any remains of archaeological significance.
