Assessment took place in June 2002 before the insertion of a pipeline (North-East Kildare Regional Water-Supply Scheme) across the River Liffey, east of Alexander Bridge, at Clane, Co. Kildare. The pipeline is to cross the river adjacent to the zone of archaeological potential of Clane town.
Visual inspection and magnetometry survey by hand-held metal-detector were employed to assess the archaeological potential of the riverbed and attendant banks. Detailed descriptions were made of the riverbed topography/bottom composition, and all metal-detector hits were inspected and logged. The survey area extended 30m upstream and 30m downstream of the pipeline route. No material of archaeological significance was recovered.
