Testing was undertaken at the site of a proposed service-station redevelopment at the southern end of Abbey Street, Castledermot, Co. Kildare, on 11 October. The site is within the zone of archaeological potential of Castledermot and is to the south-east and across the street from the remains of a Franciscan friary.
Five trenches were excavated. No features of archaeological interest were uncovered. A layer of peat, 0.35–0.5m thick, was uncovered lying over the subsoil. Thin veins of sand running through this material indicated episodes of flooding, and this may explain the absence of any archaeological activity within the boundaries of the site.
