An excavation was carried out before the proposed M4 Kinnegad–Enfield–Kilcock road development at Site 5 (measuring 30m by 25m) Ballyvoneen from 30 September to 4 October 2002.
The site was uncovered during linear testing carried out by Dermot Nelis (No. 908, Excavations 2002, 02E0141) and was identified as an undefined series of post-holes and a pit, along with modern episodes, spread over a distance of 24m north–south by 17.4m.
It was recommended that the area be fully excavated before construction works. Topsoil-stripping of an area of c. 30m by 25m around the site would allow features to be revealed and assessed.
The excavation uncovered very small-scale activity at the site. Most of the features represented relatively modern drainage activity or natural/non-archaeological hollows. Only one small pit showed any potential of being associated with archaeological activity, but this was isolated, and it is not felt that there are any significant archaeological deposits in the immediate vicinity.
