An assessment was carried out along the route of a proposed water pipeline at Ballyloughan, Co. Kildare. The proposed development would consist of the construction of a water supply pipeline, c. 30km long, running from an existing reservoir site at Duncreevan, west of Kilcock, to its termination at a proposed reservoir at Castlewarden South.
The proposed development falls within 30m of part of the Pale defences. Testing was carried out on 27 May 2002 along the line of the proposed pipeline route. Two trenches were excavated. Nothing of archaeological significance was identified. However, the construction of the pipeline would impinge on the mortared, arched, stone culvert identified at the northern end of Trench 1. Although this may represent an extension of the Pale boundary, it is felt that this is unlikely because of the lack of further archaeological evidence from Trench 2.
