Testing was undertaken in an area to the rear of 26–27 Duke Street, Athy. The site is on the west side of the River Barrow, within the area of the walled town; the existing plot pattern is indicative of medieval burgage plots.
Two trenches were excavated by machine. The testing revealed a layer of rubble, c. 0.5m deep, overlying a compact, gravelly clay layer. This latter material, which was investigated to a depth of c. 0.3m, has been uncovered elsewhere on the site (Excavations 1995, No. 141, and Excavations 1996, No. 173). No features or artefacts of archaeological interest were uncovered. In addition, existing stone sheds were examined to determine whether any medieval material had been incorporated in their construction. No such material was identified.
