Testing was undertaken at a development site at 8 Barrow Quay, Athy, Co. Kildare, on 24 August. The site is on the east side of the River Barrow, within the area of the walled town, and it is probable that quays existed here from the 13th century, when the passage of boats between New Ross and Athy is first referred to.
Two trenches were excavated by machine. The testing revealed a layer of rubble, c. 0.5m deep, overlying a moderately compact clay layer. This latter material, which was investigated to a depth of c. 0.5m, has been uncovered elsewhere in the town, and geotechnical investigations have indicated that it can be up to 2.5m deep. No features or artefacts of archaeological interest were uncovered during the testing.
