The Landmark Trust is renovating the early 20th-century lighthouse-keeper’s dwelling at Cromwell’s Fort, Valencia, for use as a holiday home. Subsurface works in the vicinity of the house involve the laying of two pipes, a sump and a septic tank. A reed bed is also to be created. The lighthouse is sited within an earlier, 17th-century blockhouse. Monitoring took place, on 19 August 2002, of the clearance by mechanical excavator of the areas for services. A dark brown, peaty soil up to 0.6m deep overlay bedrock. The foundations of 19th-century buildings, since demolished, were uncovered. No finds or structures of archaeological significance were revealed.
