Monitoring of access roads, ancillary works and services to eight units was undertaken at an extension to Ballyspillane Industrial Estate. The ancillary works are subject to individual planning applications and were not included in the current phase of development. An enclosure (SMR 67:14) is situated within the bounds of the site but was not directly affected by the present works. Significant parts of the western area of the site were recently stripped, without archaeological supervision, by the ESB.

The topsoil consisted of a mid- to dark brown, sandy silt with occasional fragments of modern glass and crockery, averaging 0.2m deep. This overlay a brown/orange silty sand, which in turn overlay a sterile, grey, clayey sand. This last layer was quite gravelly and became more sandy with greater depth. Iron pan was evident in the southern area of the site. Humus-rich, waterlogged soils were present along excavated field boundaries. The access road formed a T-junction near the centre of the site, and four features of potential archaeological importance were observed here. These were later excavated under an extension to the same licence (No. 834, Excavations 2002).
