An application for planning permission was made for the construction of commercial units. An archaeological impact assessment was required, as part of the development lay within the zone of potential of a ringfort site. Testing was carried out on 9 October 2002. Four trenches, 45–50m long and 1.8m wide, were excavated by a mechanical excavator with flat bucket in the area immediately west of the factory premises in the southern part of the field. They were all aligned north–south, with a space of c. 5m between them. All were excavated to subsoil. The topsoil was a mid-brown, clayey silt and was very thin (<0.2m), coming down onto a grey/brown clay subsoil. A considerable quantity of modern rubbish and industrial waste from the factory was present in the soil. No archaeological features or artefacts were encountered.
