Excavation before conservation works took place over two weeks in July and August 2002. The work was originally limited to the supervision of the clearance of vegetation that had built up over these steps since the 19th century. Clearance revealed part of a rectangular stone structure east of and abutting the outer face of the steps. This structure was partly excavated, revealing burnt spreads. Work was slowed by the location of the structure at a cliff edge. Excavation will be completed in 2003.
