Testing was carried out on the site at Dromin, Fossa, during February 2001 (Excavations 2001, No. 566) before proposed development. Testing revealed that a ploughed-out fulacht fiadh, which was to be preserved in a large green area surrounded by an access road, was being encroached on by the proposed road. Outline planning permission was granted for the development of the site. The southern part of the fulacht fiadh mound was excavated under an extension to the licence.
An area measuring 7.2m north-east/south-west by 5.95m was investigated. The fulacht fiadh mound material was up to 0.32m deep and not in its original location; it had been disturbed by ploughing. Below the fulacht fiadh material humic deposits were revealed. The humic material was above the creamy grey subsoil, which was poorly drained. The excavated part of the mound was cut by six plough furrows in which the stratigraphy was generally inverted. Two deeply cut land drains were also revealed in the area of excavation. The fulacht fiadh will not be further encroached on during the development.
