Monitoring took place before the construction of a house at Derrylahan near Kenmare, within the zone of potential of an enclosure.
Local information revealed that the site had previously been used as a sand-and-gravel quarry. Numerous boulders and areas of bedrock were evident on-site after removal of the vegetation. The topsoil in the area of the access road and the house was a dark red/brown, silty sand averaging 0.3m deep. The subsoil was a mid-grey/brown clay with occasional gravel patches. The area of the percolation pit (1.5m deep) had been subject to digging in the past and consisted of 1m of topsoil overlying a gravel subsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was observed.
