Testing was carried out within the zone of potential of a hut-site complex at Clahane, Knockmoyle, before the construction of a telecommunications mast. The proposed area of construction is on a relatively level shelf of mountainside in the Slieve Mish Mountains. The surrounding area contains several masts and access tracks. Two trenches were excavated by machine across the proposed compound area and access track. Trench 1, across the proposed mast location, measured 10m north-west/south-east by 1m. Trench 2 measured 20m north-east/south-west by 1m. Both were excavated through peat and into the underlying scree slope. No archaeological material was encountered. The area of the development was featureless, boggy mountain-side. No hut sites were found in the immediate area. However, a sheepfold lies c. 100m upslope of the proposed mast, and a large disturbed cairn crowns the summit of Knockmoyle Mountain.
