Active erosion of a large burial-ground continues at Caherquin, Smerwick Harbour, Co. Kerry. The site extends for over 200m along a sand dune, with numerous structures, walls and burials visible in a 5m-high section. Reports of human remains on the beach at Smerwick are a regular occurrence. A licence to recover disarticulated remains was issued in August on foot of a report to the local authorities and DĂșchas. Findings from previous work at the site undertaken by Isabel Bennett (Excavations 1996, No. 166; Excavations 1997, No. 233, 96E0302) indicated a 14th-/15th-century date for activity on the site.
