Monitoring of groundworks associated with the construction of two semi-detached dormer holiday cottages took place at Ballyoughteragh South, near Ballyferriter. The site, on the landscaped lawn of a holiday home complex, was within the zone of archaeological potential of a hut site.
There was considerable evidence that the site of the development had been raised using imported soils. The lawn overlay a layer of sand, 0.5m deep, which overlay a thin layer of tarmacadam. Underneath this was another layer of sand up to 0.3m deep. This overlay a layer of dark, compact peat that was interpreted as the original ground level before any modern development of the site. Under this was sterile sand.
The maximum depth of excavation was 1.2m at the western end of the site and just 0.3m at the eastern end. Nothing of archaeological importance was uncovered during the monitoring.
