Monitoring of groundworks was undertaken at this site from 22 to 24 May 2002. The groundworks did not exceed 0.5m in depth and were divided into two areas: the area within the extant building and the area in the yard to the rear. The excavation works by the contractor’s team began in the yard to the rear, and a 0.5m depth of modern rubble fill was removed by hand. Internal excavation works removed the existing flag floor and a discontinuous area of modern cobbles. Underlying these surfaces was modern redeposited rubble and fill. At the eastern end of the area, 1m from the rear wall, were the remains of a foundation that had been partially exposed during earlier testing at the site by Richard Crumlish (No. 739, Excavations 2002). This was in a poor state of preservation and survived to one course only. It was 3.5m long and a maximum of 1.4m wide, although it was not of solid construction. At the southern end of the foundation a narrow breach had been lined with brick, possibly to facilitate a service pipe. The feature was recorded and preserved in situ, and no further excavation took place.
