Monitoring of pipe-trench excavation for the laying of storm and foul sewers was carried out in the Salthill and Knocknacarra area of Galway city from October 2001 to March 2002. Four archaeological sites were identified in the vicinity of the groundworks. Only one of these, an unclassified earthwork, was extant; the rest were either destroyed or not visible at ground level. Monitoring of the scheme revealed road fill, modern redeposited layers and natural subsoil lacking any finds or features of archaeological significance. For the most part the course of the pipeline followed existing roadways. Where it impinged on greenfield areas (Galway Golf-Course, the Salthill Caravan Park and the marshy ground near Blake’s Hill), the ground had been landscaped, backfilled or previously disturbed to a greater or lesser extent.
