These features were identified on 5 July 2002 during monitoring of Section 2 of the Pipeline to the West and were excavated from 29 to 31 July. They consisted of two associated charcoal-rich pits truncated by cultivation ridges. The pits were on the east-facing slope of a low rise in undulating grassland, with marshier ground to the north and east.
Pit 1 was sub-oval, measuring 2.15m north–south by 1.53m, and was 0.5m deep; it contained three fills. The cut had gradually sloping sides breaking to a concave base, with evidence of scorching around the sides. Pit 2, c. 2m south of Pit 1, was subcircular. It measured 1.3m north–south by 1.43m and was a maximum of 0.48m deep. It contained a single fill of dark grey/black, silty sand with occasional flecks of charcoal and small stones. No finds were retrieved from either pit.
