Monitoring of topsoil-stripping at two phases of a housing development in Caherwalter, Loughrea, Co. Galway, was carried out on 24 and 25 July and 15 and 16 October 2002. The development consisted of the construction of 77 houses with all site works and services. The development site was a short distance north-west of a ringfort, SMR 105:50. The initial phase of the development concerned seventeen houses, and the second phase 26 further dwellings. Topsoil-stripping revealed natural, undisturbed stratigraphy and nothing of archaeological significance. The three types of subsoil found below the topsoil were natural deposits.
