This feature, a small pit with charcoal inclusions, was exposed during monitoring of Section 2 of the Pipeline to the West and was excavated on 1 May 2002. It lay on poor pastureland on the crest of a low rise sloping gently toward marshy ground to the north-east. It consisted of a blackened clay deposit contrasting sharply with the surrounding grey/ brown natural layer. The cut measured 0.62m north–south by 0.52m and was dug to a maximum depth of 0.13m. The single fill was a black silty clay with occasional small stones and charcoal flecks. No finds were retrieved from the fill or from the vicinity of the feature. In the absence of any datable finds and/or associated features, the site may best be interpreted as an isolated hearth or ‘pot-boiler’.
